Advice for Your Business – Branding
A brand has been defined as a “visual, emotional, rational or cultural image you associate with a company or product”. In other words we associate the big yellow M with McDonalds or we associate reliability with Toyota. Is branding just for big multinationals you may ask? No, branding is for every business.
Where Does Branding Fit Into My Business?
Branding can be something as simple as having a logo designed and keeping all communication with customers consistent. You would have the same colours and designs on your letterhead, business card, compliment slip, website, posters, advertising and the sign outside your door! The object of the exercise is that the customer will begin to recognise your brand instantly as a result of it being reinforced. It is important to remember however, that your brand must be defined to suit your business.
How Do I Define My Brand?
By defining your brand I mean deciding on a brand that will be relevant to your company both in design and in the associations it arouses within the customer. Things to consider are colours, images and even fonts. If your target market is the adult male you would need to use colours that will appeal to him such as deep red, black or dark blue. The adult male wouldn’t be impressed by a baby pink logo in his aftershave bottle! Next, use images that convey your message. For example if you are selling to a child, bright colours and even cartoon images are suitable but these wouldn’t be suitable to an audience of business people. Again fonts must be either playful or professional.
Be Unique
The worst thing you could do is copy your competition. A unique brand stands out and is more memorable to the customer. Also, remember a good striking but clear image is effective for two reasons; people recall images easily and your audience won’t be studying your brand, just glancing at it. Try not to use the same colours as your competitor so that your two companies can’t be confused. If your competitors haven’t really established a brand then it’s a perfect opportunity for you to establish yours and get ahead.
